N.Y. ‘gay marriage’ battle could impact U.S.

Posted on May 18, 2011 | by Michael Foust ALBANY, N.Y. (BP) – With the strong backing of the governor and the likely approval of the assembly, New York state is toying once again with legalizing “gay marriage,” a move that observers both inside and outside the state say could have a monumental impact on the rest of the country.

To read the rest of this article, go to → the Baptist Press. Jason McGuire, president of the New Yorker’s Family Research Foundation, is quoted.

Pastor Giardino is organizing a trip to Albany to attend the “Mayday for Marriage” rally. The rally is scheduled for Tuesday, May 24 from 11 AM to 3 PM. Grayson K. will be leading the contingent from Gospel Light. If you wish to be included, please contact Pastor Giardino before next Tuesday.

A church culture around eating? Nah, it can’t happen.

Do You Go to Church? You’re More Likely to Be Fat

… screams the headline. A pastor interviewed in the article said, “There’s certainly a church culture around eating”.

I sure am glad I belong to a church where food never crosses our minds (tongue firmly planted in cheek).

The Gospel of a Secular Age

We all have different interests. The news articles I may wish to read may not be of interest to you. However, even though this blog is going to point you to a particular article, one you may find dull, the web site itself, Christian Post, may have many articles that may be of interest to you. Thus, check out this article, A World Without Steve Jobs – The Gospel of a Secular Age, or check out the web site, Christian Post.

Article Extract: But the genius of Steve Jobs has been to persuade us, at least for a little while, that cold comfort is enough. … It is a religion of hope in a hopeless world, hope that your ordinary and mortal life can be elegant and meaningful, even if it will soon be dated, dusty, and discarded like a 2001 iPod.

Opposites in the News

Could any two news articles be any more different? One article is an affirmation of faith in God. The other is a slap at faith by secular pseudo-scientists.

This first news article reports on the how God worked in the midst of the 33 trapped miners in Chile this past October. Three of the miners were Christians, one of whom led the men in prayer each evening. They were ministered to by the pastor from Vallenar Baptist Church. By the end of the ordeal, most had accepted Christ.

What Those Miners Found

and

Miners Heard Bible Studies and Sermons

The second news article is about a so-called research study (really just an analysis of survey data) that was in published in the December issue of the American Sociological Review. Your blogger originally heard this clap-trap on ABC radio, but it can be found on many news sites. The study claims “it is the social aspects of religion rather than theology or spirituality that leads to life satisfaction”. Further, they claim that “built friendships” are the “secret ingredient” in religion. This claim is an abomination to the experience of most Christians. The researchers claim illogical results and state them as fact.

He’d Rather Have Jesus – By Roy Exum

“Glen Coffee, a 23-year-old kid who had a $2.5 million contract and a promising career in pro football, walked away from the San Francisco 49ers on Friday and none of the cynical national media knew quite what to do or say. That’s because Glen, a back-up running back for the 49ers, calmly said he’d rather walk with Jesus instead of playing games anymore.” Read the rest of the story at The Patriot Post.

Today’s Music Industry And Your Children

Twice this year, Gospel Light has played host to Pastor Jim Donath and his wife Lois. On both occasions, Brother Donath preached on the perils of secular music and the deliberate attempts by today’s music industry to influence our children, and not in a good way. For reviews of his visits, go here and here on this blog.

A recent article has appeared in The Patriot Post which continues on the theme of deliberately corrupting your children through music. This article is a must read for parents with children of any age, but especially for those with preteens or younger. The article “Music Industry Sexualizes Your Children” was written by Rebecca Hagelin, a senior communications fellow at The Heritage Foundation, a conservative think tank based in Washington, D.C.

Christian College Student to be Expelled

A Christian graduate student enrolled in the Counselor Education Program at Augusta State University in Georgia is facing expulsion from the university because of her Christian beliefs. She is being forced to either take a remediation program designed to change her opinions on homosexuality and transgendered persons or be dismissed from the graduate program. Read the whole story on her subsequent lawsuit here and here. Attorneys with the Alliance Defense Fund have filed suit against the university on behalf of the student, Jennifer Keeton. Is this an isolated case? Thank again. In universities across the country there are many instances where Christian students in counseling or psychology programs have been expelled or threatened with dismissal for refusal to change their religious beliefs

Shhh…don’t say “Jesus” in public

It seems just by invoking the name of Jesus in a public prayer will offend someone. Well at least some public officials are too afraid that it might offend someone. So the courageous clerk for the North Carolina House of Representatives took matters into her own hands and arranged to have Pastor Ron Baity (Berean Baptist Church in Winston-Salem), the honorary chaplain fired after his May 31st prayer. He had refused to remove the name “Jesus” from his opening legislative prayer for the government chamber’s sessions. So the clerk brought the matter to House Speaker Joe Hackney who promptly fired Pastor Baity. “She said ‘We would prefer that you not use the name Jesus. We have some people here that can be offended.’”, Pastor Baity told Fox News Radio. He later demanded an apology from the Speaker of the House and the clerk in a letter sent by his legal representative, the Christian Law Association. He is also requesting to be reinstated to his position at the state capital to finish his tenure. His attorney, David C Gibbs III, noted: “The First Amendment promises all Americans the free exercise of their religion, which includes the right to pray as their faith requires, even when they are invited to open state legislative sessions with prayer.” He added, “There is no authority in American history, tradition or Supreme Court precedent that requires a legislature to censor a private citizen’s prayers in order to participate in a benefit or privilege that is offered to other citizens of the state.”

Florida School District Bans Bibles

The Hijacking of Christianity

Most of us are aware of the perilous times we live in, especially for true Christian believers. Most of the time, in this forum, we try to steer clear of politics and stay focused on God’s will and plan. However, every now and then, an article catches one’s attention and is advertised in this space.  One such article, which is well thought out and plainly delivered, can be found here on The Patriot Post web site. We do need to stay current with affairs of our country.

Christian preacher arrested in Britain

Dale McAlpine was charged with causing “harassment, alarm or distress” after a homosexual police community support officer (PCSO) overheard him reciting a number of “sins” referred to in the Bible, including blasphemy, drunkenness and same sex relationships.

The 42-year-old Baptist, who has preached Christianity in Workington, Cumbria for years, said he did not mention homosexuality while delivering a sermon from the top of a stepladder, but admitted telling a passing shopper that he believed it went against the word of God.

“My freedom was taken away on the hearsay of someone who disliked what I said, and I was charged under a law that doesn’t apply.”
