One day after an episode of “confrontational evangelism” with the harlot church at 296 Flower City Park, Kevin Deegan spent time to teach adult Sunday School at Gospel Light Bible Baptist Church. “Field Preaching” for “open air workers” was his topic, doing “God’s work, God’s way.” Jesus commanded us to preach openly, that was His “primary way” of spreading the message. Jesus preached far more often by the roadside and by the seaside than in the synagogues. But “a lot of people don’t go because of fear”, Bro. Kevin explained. However, Bro. Kevin used himself as an example, saying God will provide for you; Bro. Kevin had, in the past, a speech impediment and was an introverted soul. He testified from experience that God will bring to mind the words you need at the time you need them. “God made your tongue, God can’t put His words on your tongue?” Bro. Kevin said “you don’t have to have the gift of speaking” as seen in I Cor 1:21-26. God doesn’t call the wise or the mighty so that He can get the glory.
“Open air preaching”, today, seems strange and offensive to many. But it was not always like that. Not too long ago in our country, street preaching was very common. As proof, Bro. Kevin displayed a number of aged, formally popular books used for and instructing in the activities of street preaching. He urged us to “praise His name now…in front of the lost; is is not a strange thing.” It is the biblical way of many who have gone before us. He quoted John Wesley, who said: “To this day field preaching is a cross to me, but I know my commission and see no other way of preaching the gospel to every creature.” He also named many other famous preacher’s who went out to the streets. These men were committed to the task at hand.
Bro. Kevin taught that we “need to be commanded, called, committed, and compassionate toward preaching to the lost. He mentioned “Ham & Eggs”, where “the chicken is involved, but the pig is committed.” Jesus Christ told us to “Go ye into all the World, and preach the gospel to every creature” Mark 16:15. Titus 1:3 tells us it is a command to warn every man.
The apostle Paul said, “woe is unto me, if I preach not the gospel”1 Cor 9:16. “Think about eternity; its going to be forever” that the lost will be in hell, urged Bro Kevin. We are going to see this and their blood will be on our hands. In heaven, we will meet the missionaries who went out into the world and suffered and sacrificed much. Are you going to be ashamed when they ask what you did for the Lord? Bro. Kevin said pointedly, “You know why street preaching doesn’t work? Because you don’t do it.” He asked, “Will you go? Will you enter in the harvest? Will you work for Him?” “You praise the Lord by winning souls.”, he reflected.
When asked whether confrontation is necessary, Bro. Kevin explained that every situation is different and that the Spirit of God will lead you. Sometimes being gentle is the way, but sometimes reproof is necessary. Pastor Giardino added that it is “important to get Christ put out there no matter how you do it.” “The righteous are bold as a lion.” Prov 28:1, he said. Bro. Kevin continued, saying, “do it God’s way, get in tune with Him, its not always with contention.” “Answer them softly,” he said.
