Is there any reason to believe that this declaration no longer applies to the United States of America of today? Jefferson was later quoted as asking, “Can the liberties of a nation be thought secure when we have removed their only firm basis, a conviction in the minds of the people that these liberties are the gift of God?’ The founders of our nation knew that, without the fear of God, arrogant and powerful men will turn to tyranny.
