When a Hymn is Written

We sing many beautiful hymns at Gospel Light Bible Baptist Church. They can stir us to be inspired or perhaps comforted. However, how often do we think about the circumstances that may have lead the author to write the hymn? One of the saddest, jarring narrations I’ve ever come across is behind the writing of the hymn “It Is Well With My Soul”. The lyrics were composed in 1873 by Horatio G. Spafford , a Chicago lawyer, after the tragic deaths at sea of his four remaining children. The story can be found at www.biblestudycharts.com. For more information, go to www.wikipedia.com. Whenever we sing this hymn again, I am sure to remember the supreme faithfulness to God that motivated the penning of this hymn.
