(Sunday Morning Recap 08-01-10) During our adult Sunday school, Pastor Giardino conducted a word study on the meaning of “accept/acceptable” in the bible. He stated that “words are placed for their perfectness and purpose in the King James Bible.” The words enhance the doctrine being discussed. In Luke 4:18-19, Jesus teaches, “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, To preach the acceptable year of the Lord.” The word “acceptable” is associated with the gospel and means to “take or receive what is offered” and at the same time “valuing and esteeming” what is being offered.
Sunday morning service started out with wonderfully performed and inspired singing from Lori, Michael, and Julia. We heard two songs from the trio, “When The Sun Of My Life Goes Down” and “Jesus Never Fails”. The highlight of the morning was easily the decision by our guest, Steve West, to accept Jesus Christ as his Lord and Saviour. Steve was positively beaming. Also bringing much joy was the Steve Derefinko family, who stood before the congregation asked to join the church. The “yahs” were unanimous.
The sermon started with the reading of Hab 1:13-16 and was titled “The Right Angle”. The metaphor in the passages was that Habakkuk was trying to get Israel’s attention, to persuade Israel to get right. Pastor Giardino stated that “God won’t put up with our shenanigans”, that we need to get right with God. Three points were given in the sermon.
1.) God’s Bait – The line from God hangs down with bait at a “right angle”. However, the devil has all kinds of lures to tempt us with. So our pastor asked, “What kind of bait are you looking for?”The illustration that Pastor Giardino brought out was drawn by his wife Lori and shows Charlie the Tuna, who was the star of the SunKist commercials in the 60’s. The illustration was used to show that, “you can’t get to heaven on your own merits or righteousness, but through God’s righteousness.
2.) God’s Battle – The devil has a trophy room for souls and has his prize fish, Pastor G. said. The battle lines have been drawn. The battle is raging over different gospels and different teachings. And part time Christians have already been sidelined from the battle by the devil’s deceptions.
3.) God’s Bonus – Our bonus from God is His own righteousness, which is how we have eternal life. “God wants to intersect you at the right angle”, preached Pastor Giardino as he urged us to reconnect with God.
