Musings …

Last week, I was poking around the church office when I came across one of Pastor’s books on a shelf. It had obviously never been read, but the cover intrigued me; it looked like a boxing match poster. The book title, “Paul meets Muhammad, A Christian – Muslim Debate on the Resurrection”, certainly portended a donnybrook. So I snatched it, began to read it, was even more intrigued, and eventually asked Pastor to loan it me. I did read the whole book (finishing early this morning), but this blogger is too lazy to write a book review. It’s just too easy to scan the back page of the book:Muslims seem to forget that the Old Testament speaks of the resurrection also. Consider these two verses to start with:

  • And many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt.” Dan 12:2
  • Thy dead men shall live, together with my dead body shall they arise. Awake and sing, ye that dwell in dust: for thy dew is as the dew of herbs, and the earth shall cast out the dead.” Isaiah 26:19

As often happens in science, researchers are spellbound when they come across unexplainable patterns or coincidences in nature. Christian scientists however understand that “The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork.” Psalms 19:1.

One pattern we all know about is how the moon and the sun appear to be the exact same size in the sky. This allows the spectacular solar eclipses in which the moon exactly covers the sun, allowing the solar corona to be visible. All this due to the fact that the moon is 400 times smaller than the sun but is also 400 times closer to us than the sun.

Another pattern in cosmology is called Bode’s Law and has no natural explanation for it. The law is a mathematical way to predict the distance of planets around the sun. The mathematical expression even predicts the spacing of moons around a planet. Recent astronomical research suggests that planetary systems around some other stars may fit Bode’s Law.

To suggest that the many mathematical patterns and numerical features in nature and astronomy happened by chance is foolish. We design things using patterns, so why are we surprised that God used designs in creation? The evidence for God in creation is more than just the beauty; it is in patterns and order.

Just came across this verse and was reminded of the sermon by Brother Craig Cobb last Sunday: “Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee. Trust ye in the Lord for ever: for in the Lord JEHOVAH is everlasting strength” Isaiah 26:3-4.
