Pastor began his message with a breathtaking introduction about a miner who was trapped underground for 36 hours. The miner dug toward the surface with only the light of some matches. When he ran out of matches, he dug in complete darkness until he reached a well with a ladder leading to the surface. When Pastor described what that first breath of fresh air was like to this persistent miner who had beat all odds to survive this tragedy, I couldn’t help but think of the times in my life where I have been digging out of some things. The fresh air that that miner was so longing for is just like the “fresh air” that the Lord can provide as you dig out of your situations today.

We MUST be sober minded! Pastor gave us some checklists to keep close at hand and apply to our lives. Please see 1 Thessalonians 5:4-8 (… putting on the breastplate of faith and love; and for a helmet, the hope of salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ,) and Romans 12.

Hating sin is 100% okay. Choose to be of a sober mind!

In Gen 28:13-15 Jacob was unaware of what God wanted to do in his life. Pastor spoke of how between chapters 28 & 32 of Genesis Jacob was still not SOLD OUT for God. Jacob had a defining moment in his life in chapter 32. When is your defining moment going to be? Why not NOW?

When Pastor read the definition of Awake, one thing hit me harder than any other part. “… as the mind awakes from it’s stupidity.” WOW! Yes, I think that there are so many times that our minds get so bogged down by other things in life and we reach a state of stupidity. Christians are asleep! They need to be awakened and revived!

We must be filled with the spirit and not be drunk with wine (Isaiah 29, Proverbs 23).

“The White House doesn’t impact the Church House, the Church House impacts the White House.” Let’s make an impact in our country today.

While being awakened and sobering up we also need to be humble. When we let God’s glory increase in our lives as we decrease, that is where God will really have an impact on others.

Pastor spoke about how God has used deep sleeps to speak to many over the years. He referenced just a few: Adam, Abram, Daniel. Is it possible that our country has been in a deep sleep for a reason? What could God be telling us?

A very touching point of this sermon was when Pastor was speaking of the influence that Brother Gipp has had on his life over the years. He admitted that there was a time that he really had NO interest in what Brother Gipp had to say. He wasn’t ready for it. However, as Pastor changed over the years, he realized how much he NEEDED his influence and direction in his life. Let’s not wait! Even if some of the things that we hear in preaching today throw us off a little or sound a little harsh or over the top, let’s cling to the preaching, get our thoughts right, and do whatever we have to do to get things right with God so that we can make a difference in these last days.

To be Sober – not mad or insane; not drunken; not under the influence of passion; having your mind settles on things.

1) A sobering thought – is there a sense of sobriety in your life? Pastor gave us some other key scriptures and lists to apply to our lives Titus 1 & 2, 2 Peter 1. Pastor also challenged younger women to learn from the older women, and older women to be available for training the younger women in sobriety.

2) A Sobering Fight – ENGAGE IN THE FIGHT! 1 Thes 5:8, 1 Peter 5:8. PUT ON THE ARMOR OF LIGHT! (Romans 14). GIRD UP THE LOINS OF YOUR MIND!!! (1 Peter 1:13). Now is the time to have that defining moment and really SOBER UP and make an impact for Christ!

3) Sobering Sought – Christ’s return is coming soon! Be sober and excited, anticipating His return. Hoping for heaven in 2011! (Titis 2:11, Rom 12). Paul was training men for ministry. Be trained, train, LIVE SOBERLY!

In those days messages were received in dreams, and now we receive them through preaching, devotions, and our prayer lives. Let’s make sure that we are available to receive the messages that we need to receive from God by really devoting our attention to the things our Pastor is telling us, where he is leading us, and where the Lord is leading us through our daily reading and prayer.

1 Thessalonians 5:4-8 – 4 But ye, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief. 5 Ye are all the children of light, and the children of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness. 6 Therefore let us not sleep, as [do] others; but let us watch and be sober. 7 For they that sleep sleep in the night; and they that be drunken are drunken in the night. 8 But let us, who are of the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love; and for an helmet, the hope of salvation.
